"No one would have believed, in the last years of the nineteenth century, that human affairs were being watched keenly and closely by intelligences greater than man's and yet as mortal as his own; that as men busied themselves about their affairs they were scrutinized and studied, perhaps almost as narrowly as a man with a microscope might scrutinize the transient creatures that swarm and multiply in a drop of water."
War Of The Worlds, H.G. Wells.
A Brilliant start from a brilliant creator of some of the worlds best sci-fi. A late 19th - early 20th century phenomenal writer.

"Honestly, Alec! You can't go hacking your way out of every difficult situation that arises! It's uncivilized." From Luck in the Shadows by Lynn Flewelling. It would probably make more sense in context. Let me explain: Alec (an aspiring theif and spy) has just been told by his teacher/mentor that he's not allowed to bring his sword along with him while attempting his first solo breaking and entering. I laughed out loud when I read that line.

I looked around. They were standing. All around us and in the balcony on the opposite wall, the Negroes were getting to their feet. Reverend Skye's voice was as distant as Judge Taylor's: "Miss Jean Louise, stand up. Your father's passin'."
