is there a size difference between the men's and women's size in clothing? for example, is L for men the same as L for women? or is L for men equal to XL for women?

totally different animals
Including the placement of buttons and zippers.
The cuts are really the the difference outside of the number and letter size.

The measurement to take is the (around =1") chest or hips depending on the item, neither one will match the men's size waist line, since we have smaller waist and the men have barrel shapes most times. The shoulders will not fit either and it will hang over her deltoids. So a alteration of the sleeves, width and length will need to be made to accommodate. About $5 a piece.

Depending on the build of the woman woman's L-14-16 top that would be a man's M, it will be longer of course on a woman.

If you are getting "team t-shirts" then measure their chest and get a size larger, cotton shrinks and it will not make it easy for them to move. I highly recommned washing all t-shirts prior to the logo being added, to watch for shrinkage.

women's clothes tend to be a little smaller than men's clothes....but it depends on the store too.
