This song is about being depressed. Brian Wilson was a beachboy that went through an extreme depression. The song describes things that went on in his life at that time. Ex: He was 300 pounds. The lyric that talks about playing in the sand refers to the rumor that Wilson filled his bedroom up with sand to increase his creativity.
The reference to Dr. Landry refers to the psychiatric guru that lived at Wilson's house, and (many feel) took advantage of Brian's mental sickness and addictions (a pedagogue is both the master and teacher of a person -- sort of like a cult or religious leader, or in this case, a pychiatric leader).
Pavlov performed experiments on the behavior of dogs - they would respond to sound cues essentially automatically.

I can tell you who Brian Wilson is. He was a member of the Beach Boys (actually started them). This may help: Canadian rock group Barenaked Ladies paid tribute to the Beach Boy in their hit song "Brian Wilson," which makes reference to both his mental illness and Landy. In a weird twist, Brian Wilson actually covered this song for a live album. I think he's saying he is like Pavlov's dog in that he is reactionary to something specific. I believe he is saying he hopes the doctor isn't just a teacher that just teaches, but someone who cares and can help him. Plus pedagogue rhymes with dog.

The song's history began with Lennon writing a song for Timothy Leary's failed gubernatorial campaign in California against Ronald Reagan, one which promptly ended when Leary was sent to prison for possession of marijuana. It was transformed by Lennon into a track with digs at McCartney and Harrison interspersed alongside tales of his Bagism movement with wife Yoko Ono

Check "Brian Wilson" in Wikipedia. It talks about Dr. Landy and Brian's life. While you are there, you can check "Pavlov" to find out about the experiments involving dogs. :)

BNL rocks. =)
