This is a very good question. How to begin ? OK, I grew up without an air conditioner. I was in the 8th grade before we had a TV. We didn't have dishwashers, microwaves, computers, cell phones...none of the modern amenities we have today. Yet, we look back and say those were the good old days. Our kids today will one day look back and say the same thing. So, what am I missing living in this time ? Nothing. You can't miss what you don't have or know not of.

Princessm...I can relate to everything you said. Those were the good old days.

Boy, there's such a difference just between now and when I was a child! I miss being able to trust people. As we approach Halloween I think of how we used to stay out collecting candy until it got dark, without worrying about who we were taking candy from.

And if it's October, can Christmas decorations be far behind? Would you believe there was a time when those things didn't come out until after Thanksgiving?? What a concept, huh?

I miss writing real letters to people instead of emails that have totally reshaped our written language. As if sending an email with virtually instant delivery wasn't fast enough, now we can't take the time to write "you are"... we've got to replace it with u r.

I miss the quiet... does anyone else think it's noisy all the time? Even now with the TV off, I hear the hum .. something. I don't know what, but it's there, like white noise.

I remember the smell of the linens after my mom pulled them in from drying on the clothesline .. is there anything more comforting than falling asleep to the scent of sunshine and fresh air on your sheets?

It was unheard of for stores to be open 24 hours ... they closed at 5pm on Saturday and didn't open again til Monday, so you had to make sure you bought what you needed, or you went without.

We had 5 TV channels on the old black&white console TV with the rabbit ears on top. And somewhere along about Easter, we'd get all excited because mom was going to make popcorn and we would watch the annual broadcast of The Wizard of Oz. The first time I saw it in color was at a friend's house... where we got into our jammies and her mom made..... popcorn!

Do you remember looking for discarded pop bottles? We'd collect them and take them to the corner store, where we'd turn them in for the deposit money and then buy penny candy. For two bottles, we'd end up with a bag full of candy.

If we're talking specifics, those are the kinds of nostalgic things I miss.

Intelligence. I mean people have always done stupid things but these days , (with this new generation) its ok even cool to be stupid and shallow. Its like every thing that was important no longer matters and its all about being cool and buying the latest shoe/clothing/device/ and so on.

We lost our culture and replaced it with consumerism.

I miss the time when being stupid and shallow was something bad.

There are more humans, living longer--even in third world countries--- than ever before--and they have greater opportunities than ever before--- and they seem to want to spam, phone, harass, tax me and cut me off in traffic every chance they get.

So I'll say that I miss the privacy and space.

Don't miss the polio and smallpox, however.
