***hole is definitely more to the point. It is concentrating on one specific piece of the ***. You could almost think of it as adding a more descriptive adjective to the noun of *** by throwing in the hole.
I would take it as a compliment, you were worth 2 syllables and 7 letters to someone, instead of just 3 measly letters and 1 syllable.

There is more emphasis when "hole" is used. Its like an a** times 7.

Asshole (or ******** outside of North America) is a slang term for the anus, the whole posterior or a (verbally abused) person.

*** hole is acting up in a bad way that pisses people off.
*** hole is more severe imo.

When they say that you're an ***, it means that you are being stupid. When they say that your an *******, it means that you are being an *******. Hope that helps.
