The biggest differences are the form of leavening, and the sweetness.

Most breads are leavened (made to rise, and adding gas bubbles in the crumb) with yeast, giving them a very distinctive flavor. (Quick breads, like banana bread, muffins, or zucchini bread, are really more like cakes, and contain no yeast.)

Cakes are leavened with baking powder or baking soda.

Cakes clearly have more sugar or other sweetener.

Another difference is that cakes are mixed only long enough to completely combine the ingredients, to keep them light, whereas breads are kneaded - stretched and folded - to develop gluten, that which gives bread a chewy texture.

Why don't you ask Marie Antoinette? (It was a difference that she lost her head over.) Cake is generally a richer form of bread, containing sugar, while bread does not necessarily have to, (though it can) in a classification one might be able to say the cake is a form of bread but bread is not a form of cake. (Hence Marie's trouble, the peasants were out of bread, thus unable to "eat cake." Perhaps if she had had yahoo answers the whole messy revolution could have been avoided... no not really, but at least she would've known the reason her "beloved children" were relieving her of her slightly airy head.)
