The biggest differences are the form of leavening, and the sweetness.

Cakes are leavened with baking powder or baking soda.

Cake is generally a richer form of bread, containing sugar, while bread does not necessarily have to, (though it can) in a classification one might be able to say the cake is a form of bread but bread is not a form of cake.
