Some animals are born with their eyes shut. Their eyes don't open for a few days or so.
Is there any biological reason for this?

I know some people have said that part of the reason for being born blind is because the womb is dark and it would be hard on the eyes. The question then is why aren't human babies born with their eyes closed for a few weeks.

Sensitive to light! A natural protective measure to shelter the eyes from too much light! It takes a little time to get used to the light so the eyes are shut to begin with, then they gradually open!

Cuz their eyes are still weak to the light. A doctor recommend the mother to take her new born baby in a dark room until a couple of days. Soo I think it's the same for animals

Generally the retina of the new born is very very sensitive to the light and if they are borne with their eyes open it may cause hamrful damage to the retina as well as the whole eye due to the sudden exposure of the retina to the light.
Therefore they are borne with their eyes shut, so that a very little amount of light penetrate through the eyelid and reaches to retina and the retina along with the lens adapts the eye to seen the objects when eyes are fully open.

they've been in total darkness in the womb/ eggs.... so it's a sudden change when they come out... sort of like when someone turns on the lights to a maximum when you're sleeping...when it wakes you up... you find it hard to keep your eyes open as well...

It is because every animal is born a democrat.
However they become republicans shortly after birth, when their eyes open.

Also, it protects their eyes from amniotic fluids and while passing through the birth canal.
