I mean if an organization's scouting report on a prospect is good, can't he just fire his agent and just sign the contract solo and not pay any middleman the 10%? Or better yet, if he's proven good in the pro level, and becomes an available free agent THEN he can fire his agent knowing he'll get a huge contract, right?

Because the agent negotiates the finer points of the contract, like escalators, performance bonuses, and stuff like that. And NFL agents only get 3 percent of the contract, not 10%.

agents do so much more than that, they take care of commercial deals and all that other stuff that they make money off of, If the athelete feels like being hasseled with all this stuff inbetween practices and games sure he can fire his agent but if i was him my down time would be spent enjoying all that money im making, with all the money they make paying a agent isnt that much compared to the time it frees up and the ability to make more money by having someone do this stuff for you while your working, dont forget alot of these athlets dont know all that contract mumbo jumbo that they throw in there trying to rip them off

The middleman is needed because the middleman is the one who buys the steroids.
