You Da Man!

Ever since my life began,
I realized that "You da man!"
I saw your wisdom, your courage too,
And I learned I could rely on you.

Your tolerant nature was really great;
Nevertheless, you'd not hesitate
To let me know when I'd been bad
It must have been hard, but that's being a dad.

You're strong and smart and filled with love--
A gift to me from up above.
So here's a greeting from your biggest fan:
Happy Birthday, Dad, cause "You da man!"

Real Father

Some fathers are just father figures;
A real father is still very rare.
That’s why I value so highly
The father/son/daughter bond that we share.

I’m blessed to have a real father
Who displays his love with such ease,
And that’s why I say on your birthday,
I love you more than a mouse loves its cheese!

Best Dad

Happy birthday to the best dad I know,
A father I love and respect,
A dad who fulfills all his duties
To teach, to guide, to protect.

If everyone had such a father,
A really good dad like mine,
The world would be so much better,
It would look like God’s own design.

I'm glad I got to keep you as my dad
For all these days and months and ninety years.
You've been a special father all that time,
And now it's time to give you ninety cheers!

Ten cheers for loving me no matter what;
Ten cheers to you for making me behave;
Ten cheers for always being proud of me;
the encouragement you gave.

Ten cheers for all the fun things that we did;
Ten cheers for teaching me so many things;
Ten cheers for making childhood a delight.

And now this birthday poem is almost through,
So 60 cheers, Dad, just for being you!

For a distinguished gentleman like your father sounds, I'd go with a formal open house with hors d'oerves. That way he can mix and people can just mingle and talk. For the serious part, have people write down favorite memories of him when you give the speech. And for fun, find some pics of him as a kid, or growing up, or even as a veteran. Have those blown up and around the room for nostalgia. And the family should definitely do a toast or toasts. Maybe some of his colleagues would like to make a toast too?

"When I am old I shall wear purple." by Jenny Joseph.

You might need to make a few modifications since I think it was written from the perspective of an old lady, but change the female references to suit your Dad.

When I am an old woman, I shall wear purple

with a red hat that doesn't go, and doesn't suit me.

And I shall spend my pension on brandy and summer gloves

and satin candles, and say we've no money for butter.

I shall sit down on the pavement when I am tired

and gobble up samples in shops and press alarm bells

and run my stick along the public railings

and make up for the sobriety of my youth.

I shall go out in my slippers in the rain

and pick the flowers in other people's gardens

and learn to spit.

You can wear terrible shirts and grow more fat

and eat three pounds of sausages at a go

or only bread and pickles for a week

and hoard pens and pencils and beer nuts and things in boxes.

But now we must have clothes that keep us dry

and pay our rent and not swear in the street

and set a good example for the children.

We must have friends to dinner and read the papers.

But maybe I ought to practice a little now?

So people who know me are not too shocked and surprised

When suddenly I am old, and start to wear purple.

The absolute best thing is to write something yourself. Start with some great memory you have or memories. For example, do you remember resting your head on his shoulder or asking for help and him being willing to help you, did he forgive or forget your faults one time... After describing this memory, then go into what you appreciate about him, and then end with what he's taught you about life (how to forgive, how to be "there", etc) or something that will always make you think of him and that you love him.

Often times we wait until our parents' eulogies before we ever say nice things about them in front of others. It's something your Dad will always remember, trust me.

P.S. If you're Dad wasn't a good Dad, then look for a poem on line, but if there is anything at all nice that you can say about him, go for it! (Write it down in a poem form if you like, but it will touch not only him but it will cause others there to realize they haven't appreciated their parents lately and will spread love throughout the room). Best wishes!!

Read Proverbs 4:1-27 Listen, my sons, to a father's instruction; pay attention and gain understanding.I give you sound learning, so do not forsake my teaching.When I was a boy in my father's house, still tender,and an only childof my mother, he taught me and said,"Lay hold of my words with all your heart; keep my commands and you will live.Get wisdom, get understanding; do not forget my words or swerve from them.Do not forsake wisdom,and she will protect you;love her, and she will watch over you.Wisdom is supreme; therefore get wisdom.Though it cost all you have, get understanding.Esteem her, and she will exalt you;embrace her and she will honor you.She will set a garland of grace on your head and present you with a crown of splendor."Listen my son,accept what Isay,and the years of your life will be many. I guide you in the way of wisdom and lead you along straight paths.When you walk,your steps will not be hampered;when you run,you will not stumble.Hold on to instruction,do not let it go;guard it well,for it is your life.Do not set foot on the path of the wicked or walk in the way of evil men.Avoid it,do not travel on it;turn from it and go on your way.For they cannot sleep till they do evil;they are robbed of slumber till they make someone fall.They eat the bread of wickedness and drink the wine of violence.The path of the righteous is like the first gleam of dawn,shining ever brighter till the full light of day.But the way of the wicked is like deep darkness; they do not know what makes them stumble.My son, pay attention to what Isay ;listen closely to my words.Do not let them out of your sight,keep them within your heart; for they are life to those who find them and health to a man's whole body.Above all else,guard your heart,for it is the wellspring of life.Put away perversity from your mouth; keep corrupt talk from your lips. Let your eyes look straight ahead ,fix your gaze directly before you.Make level paths for your feet and take only ways that are firm.Do not swerve to the right or the left;keep your foot from evil.

There are lots of great poets, and great poems. Are you sure you don't want to write one yourself? It's not hard! Just do free-verse, and put together mental snapshots, describe what you see, hear, smell. And then, put in some of the words that describe your father to you....

Lyrics are a good idea. I would recommend bridge over troubled water, or something from his generation that he can relate to.
