Yes, water can get too hot for fish.
Turn the aquarium light off at night, and maybe for a few hours during the day. On my timer for my ten gallon, it is set like this:
On at 7:00
Off at 13:00
On again at 16:00
Off for the day at 21:00
Here are some possible ways to help keep your aquarium cool.
1. Turn off the light at night and possibly other times (See above).
2. Get an air pump and airstone to help aerate the water.
3. Get a mini filter. These are called Red Nano or something.
If you do have a aerating device and a filter, and the water still seems too hot, drop a small ice cube into the filter. Do not allow it to go through the impeller. Like, in the media area.
Do not put ice directly into the tank.
If the light is a halogen or incandescent, then that could be a cause of heat. Use flourescent lights.

Betta don't need much light, but it isn't harmful. If there is light from a window I'd leave it off when you aren't around. In such a small tank a light could heat it up quickly. Ideally you should have some thing for him to hide under from the light. (Be sure it lacks sharp edges.)
Note on temp most tropical fish 72-82 range, betta 75-85 (mine prefer the low 80s)

It may if there isnt anything between the light and the water (like a glass cover.
You only need a light on during daylight hours if the tank doesnt get enough natural light.
Ideal temp for the water is 20 ot 22 degrees centergrade, or 74 to 78 degrees fahrenheit for cold water fish.
Go to your pet store and get a thermometer, one that sticks on the outside of the tank, it will should cost you a few dollars.

yes, the water can get too hot and kill the fish. This depends on the size of your light and how long it is running for. Some fish are less tolerant than others so the exact temp that may be too hot is unknown to me but I have a salt water aquarium and I know first hand that heat can kill.

The light shouldn't make your water too hot. But you probably don't need the light on during the day anyway. Some fish are just bottom feeders anyway, so they won't go near the top of the tank no matter what.

Most fish do not like light, as they don't have eyelids. You can get a stick on thermometer for your tank, although one gallon isn't very much water, if it gets too hot, you can cool it down with ice cubes. The ideal temp for tropical fish is............well, just checked my tank and I suppose "somewhere within the green line" isn't much of a help.
But yes, fish tanks can get too hot. Your fish on the other hand may just be a bottom or mid level dweller. Different fish hang out on different levels of a tank. If you want to enjoy your fish, try to give them more space, you can't have too many fish in a 1 gallon bowl.

Fish tanks can get to hot. When it comes to Betta's they do not require a heat source. They do best at room temp water. They don't require anything fancy. Believe it or not when Betta's are shipped to pet stores they come individually in a tiny triangle type bag with just enough water to cover the body. Also when it comes to lighting you only need the light on for 12hrs.

The Light may make the tank to hot.
Heat depletes water of oxygen , causing fish to swim upward and gasp
Beta's are antiboids they breath air through a lung like aperatus in their head , so it is normal for them to be at the top.
1 Gal aquariums may accumulate amonia quickly wich may also cause gasping.
A light may not be needed if in a room that has a natraul light source.
If one is used , I personally prefer to use it only during normal daylight hours.
There are some lightbulbs that emit no heat , while other can. Ask you Supply dealer , pet store attendant.

FISH ONLY NEED ABOUT 8-10 HOURS OFLIGHT A DAY,SIMILAR TO WHAT WE NEED. THE WATER CAN GET TO HOT. BUT THE TEMP. DEPENDS ON WHAT KIND OF FISH YOU HAVE. IF YOUHAVE GOLD FISH THEY CAN LIVE FROM AROUND 60-85 DEGREES COMFORTABLY. IF THEY ARE TROPICAL FISH THEY NEED 72-82 DEGREES. IF THE WATER IS GETTING TOO HOT, JUST OPEN THE LID OR DROP AN ICE CUBE OR TWO IN THE TANK.
BUT MAKE SURE YOU DON'T LEAVE THE LIGHT ON TOO LONG BECAUSE IT CAN CAUSE MANY PROBLEMS!

My brother has a Siamese fighting fish in a 1 gallon tank and it seems to be most happiest when they keep the tank near the stove and the water is warm. It doesn't do much other than float around but seems to really enjoy being near the heat! Other fish - like goldfish like cooler water.
