Yes.

It's Both a continent and A country.

The two aren't related.
So There's no use wondeing how it can be both if that's what you were wondering.

There's nothing restricting a whole continent from being 1 country, But That's one of the reasons that Australia Is Now reffered to as "The Lucky Country", because they don't have to share all that continent with another country.

P.S.(Someone Above Wrote that Australia is the worlds Biggest Island)

"Australia" as a country Is Not An Island
because of the state of Tasmania and other Islands around the continent, it just happens to have the worlds largest island as the main part of the country. If you want to go the Island Route, Then It's a group of Many Islands.

The Mainland,
Tasmania,
Christmas Island,
Keppel island,
Fraiser Island,
Mornington Island,
Hamilton Island,
Lord Howe Island,
Augustus Island,
Biggie Island,

Just To Mention A Small Few.

Yes. The country of Australia could be described as an island--or area of land above the surface of the ocean--located on the tectonic or continental plate [which just happens to be] called the Australian plate.
