My family has lived in a rental for a year now and we've never needed to use the breaker box. But this morning the light bulb over the kitchen sink blew and caused all the power in the kitchen to go out. We've looked everywhere for the breaker box including the garage with no luck. I can't imagine a newer home being built without one but I'm totally out of ideas on places it might be.

The Breaker Panel is usually located very close, within 5 feet of the electric meter on the side of the house. If it is a trailer, then it may be longer than that. Just follow the wires leading FROM the electric meter.

You may also want to call the landlord and ask 'em. While you are at, you might as well find out where the main water valve is just in case a major leak occurs and you need to shut off the water. Same with gas if it applies.

Since you say "home" I assume you mean house or condo, etc.

Look for the light meter on the outside of the building. The breaker box will usually be within 10 or 15 feet on the inside. They love putting these in the back of utility room or kitchen cabinets now and they quite often get hidden with "stuff". Another favorite place is the hot water closet.

Now-a-days, everything is out of sight, out of mind.

Rest assured it IS somewhere, but you're going to have to hunt for it...I'm laughing at myself because when I bought my last house, it took me the better part of a week to find my breaker box. I searched the inside of the house from top to bottom, and even went into the attic. Finally, I happened to see it peeking at me from behind a bush OUTSIDE! I nearly fell over laughing. I think builders have a sense of humor when they put those in. Places I'd try first are:
1. garage
2. closets
3. utility room
4. basement
5. somewhere on the exterior wall of the house
6. attic

Good luck!

Check outside where the meter is and follow the wire into the house. The maid breaker service panel should not be too far from where the wire enters the house.

if its a newer house, it should be next to the meter on outside of house, usually where wires come in from powere pole. many boes are in closets, behind doors, and some are hidden by people hanging pictures or other things on walls.

look at one of the outside walls, a closet close to an outside wall is usually a good place for one.

I know it sounds funny but look in the closets.
