You never do because by the time you've had to much to drink you don't care anymore.

Well ....let's see...that depends on what you mean. I know that I've had too much to drink and drive...for example...'cos I feel the booze in my system.
I know that I've been drinking too long because I start feeling sick and just bad all the time.
If I drink a little too fast...which is what I think you mean, I only notice when I am feeling real dizzy...then I really notice that I did have too much when I wake up feeling REAL thirsty.....that's when I decide that I need to quit or not.

If you're going to drink at all, you should go prepared. Have a plan for getting home that doesn't include driving. Designated sober caretakers are a great way of getting home.
Note: Do not abuse your caretaker or they will be your caretaker no more.
You haven't given any information on what you might be too drunk for. In general, responsibility and alcohol do not mix. I would not drink on a date, especially a first date. I would not drink during a business meeting. I would not drink at a social gathering where I am seeking contacts for business or social success. I tend to drink little and then in the company of friends who I trust not to take advantage of me if I do get too stupid to be responsible for anything.
Alcohol was never meant to be used the way college kids use it. Its best used to loosen up in social settings where we tend to clam up and not share or risk our intimate parts.
1 or 2 drinks are plenty for the task. Anything else is abuse of a drug.

You get a kind of "light" feeling, you start talking more, you start doing things you wouldn't have done otherwise.
The weird thing is that if I'm not too heavily drunk, I notice these changes. Still, it never stops me to change my behaviour.
I'm a moderate drinker, who has slightly too much about 2 ~3 times a year. I've been really drunk maybe 3 times in my life.

When you think you could pick a quarrel with your boss the next day, you may have had too much to drink.

When you have pucked, you have already overdosed, and this is your bodies last resort to getting rid of the toxins. Blacking out, and seeing double, or spinning, and when youve lost all your inhibitions. But then you don't care.
Try not to drink too much...:)

Any amount is too much. Wine is a mocker, strong drink raging.

If everyone in the room starts looking attractive, you *really* want to pick a fight, and you have this overwhelming urge to take your shirt off.
At least, that happened to me a couple times.

When you feel sick, when you're being violent, when you're falling in love with everything you see, when you don't have any more money, when you pass out on the curb, when you throw up in your mouth and kiss someone, when you throw up in someone's mouth WHILE you kiss them, when you black out, when you have sex but can't get it up, when you go out side in the parking lot of your apt complex just to pee while wearing only underwear. :P

By the time you get to that point, you usually aren't aware of much.
