I use a combination of baking soda, vinegar, bleach for colors, regular washing detergent, and the hottest water recommended for the clothes.
Fill the tub and let them sit for half an hour or so, turn the washer off, turn the knob back to Start and let it go through all the cycles.
Repeat until the sour odor is gone.

RE:
how do you remove the sour smell from clothes that were left in the washer too long?
I washed a load of clothes this summer and forgot them in the machine. when I remembered them, they were soured. I have tried all of the spray on remidies, and can not bleach them as they are colored.

Hello, This has happen to all of us at one time or another. What I did was to run the washing machine with a 1/2 cup bleach, and 1/3 cup vinegar. Your washer will smell nice and clean. Oh and make sure you use cold water. Also put the cylce time to light load. Sincerely, Missesb

I usually wash mine over again and that works. If not I fill the wash with warm water and detergent, let it agitate a little, then let them soak overnite. Do not dry them!! The dryer will set the smell in and it's really difficult to get out. You can try Mean Green too. It works good on clothes (color and whites). It's better than Clorox on sneakers. If you did this to your clothes this summer chances are the smell may be there to stay since it's been in them so long. Good LucK! I hate to ruin clothes too.

Add some baking soda to the wash. It will also make your colors brighter, and they will have no odor. This is what we did when our son was little and he spit up on his clothes. Since we have no washer of our own, it would be a few days before we could get to the laundromat, and boy did his shirts stink! Baking soda worked wonders. :)

Rewash with Clorox Bleach for colored clothes along with fabric softner. Then hang the clothes on a hanger and hang them in a door way in the house to air dry.

Rewash them again with Lysol for the wash or anything that you can use in the wash as a disinfectant except bleach unless they are whites. If that doesn't work, you'll have to toss them away.

Just wash the load again. Use a good fabric softener such as downy in the rinse you might want to double up on it.

Exactly how long were they in there, 'cause simply re-washing them generally takes care of the problem
