Typically, the only people who do this illogical maneuver are idiots wanting to show off their cars or people of a certain minority race in this country.

I have noticed this too and wonder about the legality of it since the plate is hidden from the cops driving by in the one-plate/car states.
HOWEVER. I was doing this myself for several weeks while my garage and I figured out a reoccurring electrical problem that SOMETIMES ran my battery down at night. I HAD to parkt that way so the towtruck operator could reach my battery and boost me off in the AMs. (The problem was a failing ground for the stay-on interior timed lights.)
And on other occasions I have backed in when I had a load in the trunk and didn't want to bring it between parked cars.
So, it's not always illogical but it usually is "show", I admit--and DOES involve a certain minority, and also crass individuals as well.
Added: (WOW!!! Look at all the raw nerves that even a non-mention by the Asker has brought to the surface. If THAT isn't Thought-Police work in operation, I don't know what is.)

Part of the problem is that the boy/girl scouts and some emergency agencies actually tell people to back in a parking spot. The idea is that in tight situations/emergencies it is easier to get out. The majority of people miss the part about it needing to be a straight in spot. If you back into the angled spots it increases your chances of being against the flow and leaves you open to being backed into. Our campus police will give tickets to the backers in

excuse me? backing into a parking spot is the LOGICAL way to park. you can pull out of the spot easier and it just makes more sense. why would you even say anything like that? wow, some people are so ignorant

It's safer that way.
If you back into your parking spot, you have clear view of traffic when you pull out. If you drive forward into your spot, then you have to back out into traffic.
Obviously, the "people of a certain minority race" are thinking of the safety of others-especially small children who may be running down the sidewalk.
