A bonus is at the discretion of the employer or business owner. Employees often have no idea the problems and costs involved in running/owning a business. EXPECTING a bonus for doing what you are being paid to do is ridiculous! I have seen employees cost a business a lot of money thorough accidentally damaging a customer's property, that the company had to make right, at their cost or loosing a customer because of shoddy work .. and it costs the employee NOTHING. But when the company has an opportunity to make a good profit some time later on some project that this same employee is involved in, all of a sudden this employee who has lost the company a lot of money now feels like they somehow are entitled to a big bonus because of their involvement in the project...NOT! The business takes the risks of the ups and downs, not the employee ...bonusus are NOT automatically "deserved"!

Most businesses recognize valuable employees ...it may not always be in a tangible way, but those employees know that they are appreciated ... sometimes it may be a bonus if the company can afford it..

It depends on the company. Bonuses are usually company wide, based on sales and profits. This might be done annually. Individuals are not likely to be discriminated against, since bonuses are based on percentages. Or some jobs, your boss might decide you deserve a bonus for an unexpected effort or behavior you've demonstrated.

At our company we get a bonus when we go above and beyond our job description and exceed all expectations when working on a particular project.
