Lots of issues hovering behind your question...
First of all her response does not necessarily mean he sought to find out about her.
Secondly your post leaves a general feeling of a lack of trust overall in your marriage. Either his actions and/ or behaviour does not make you feel secure emotionally or he has done something in the past to make your antennae go up everytime something small and relatively inconsequential happens.
By all means, ask him, because it obviously is bothering you. Be wary if he gives answers that do no reassure you. Be prepared that you will come across as a inquisitive, spying, insecure spouse who sneaks into her husband's personal information. Sooner or later that behaviour will have its expiry date.
Best of all? Be proactive to improve your relationship with your hubby.

if he is aware that you have a hibbit of hearing his messages and that doesnt bother him then why not inquire as to who it is? im sure he would tell you. if he doesnt like you checking it then keep quiet because why tell on yourself? you can just be really interested in how his day went after he gets home tomorrow.
women generally have good insticts when it comes to their men. if you feel like something is wrong, then it probably is. if not, no worries. good luck

If you have to 'check up" on your husband there are some serious trust issues here. The two of you should sit down and discuss the problem before it grows into an even larger issue.

a) Explain to him how you have violated his privacy by checking his phone messages AND apologize.
b) Ask him if he would explain a message to you which you know you were not supposed to hear, but that has left you in a world of hurting.

You should know your husband better then any of us, don't you? just think what could be the reason for that message? come on you can do it, well okay maybe you can't which should tell you something. so now you need to ask, hey its your husband can't you ask him a simple question?

well it could be nothing or your hubby could be laying the hammer down to some other chick, he could have been inquiring about it because he hasn't seen her around the office or maybe they worked on a project toghther and was curious about her input on another project he was working on. or she could be playing hide the salami with your hubby's schlong

Does he know you check his messages? If so I could be purely innocent, if he knew you might've heard it. I'd ask.

If you don't ask him about this it will fester up and become a major problem. Just tell him what happened and ask him what it's all about.
