I have 2 'Minuet' weigelas, I put them in this spring and a few shoots have taken off and appear to be out growing the rest of the plant. Should I prune these or let them go. And if I do prune, when? What other care is needed? I live in MN (zone 4a)

Weigelas do tend to take off, go ahead and trim back unruley bits. I trim mine when ever I want to and have had no bad results. We actually get blooms twice a year.
However, do not prune heavily before winter - as this allows for some winter kill that you can tidy up in the spring.
Fertilize with an all purpose granular fertilizer in the spring, that will then feed gradually through the growing season.

Pruning Weigela

Trimming this fall will mean you have no flowers next year, as it blooms on old wood. Best time to prune it right after blooming. However, for "rejuvination" pruning you are removing old stems right down to the ground, removing them entirely. You want to cut out any that are more than about 1 1/2 inches across at the base. Only remove a third of the bush in a single pruning. So go ahead an remove 1/3 of the thick, woody, old stems now. Take them out completely. Next year, it should sprout some new ones, and you can take out a few more of the old ones. Doing this three years in a row will "rejuvinate" your shrub.

Barbadoschick is giving some good info. Minuet is a reblooming variety, but as with most Weigela, the heavy spring bloom is set on old wood, this fall, for next spring. Do cut back any unruly growth.

Minuet is an extra-hardy selection, but I would still recommend some heavy mulch and maybe a rose cone for cold protection.

Start a fertilization program in the spring. I would recommend a water-soluble fertilizer. Follow the directions on the label.

Good luck-

Weigelas bloom on the previous season's wood. Remove each year one or two old stems on a mature shrub directly after flowering. Keep soil moist. Fertilize with compost tea during the growing season.Next to my Weigela, close to the root zone, I sunk a one gallon flower pot into the soil which I fill with water and liquid fertilizer.

Do your pruning right after it blooms. If you prune now, you will be cutting off branches that will flower.
