The relationship between atoms and elements is simple: 1)atoms are the basic building blocks of matter(very small).
2a)Elements are substances that are made up of these atoms.
2b)There is a corresponding atom for each element.
3)It is then essential to state, each element is made up of certain atoms that give it its unique characteristic.
4)EX:the element gold contains only gold atoms, not silver, aluminum, or anything else.

It's all in your textbook, but here's the shortest version: Atoms are the smallest stable unit of matter. An atom consists of equal numbers of protons and electrons, and some neutrons thrown in for fun. Matter is all the stuff around us that isn't energy. If it ain't one, it's the other, and there ain't no in-between. Elements are substances that are made up of only one kind of atom. So, hydrogen is an element, meaning if you have pure hydrogen, it's all hydrogen atoms. A compound is stuff made up of multiple elements. If you have pure table salt, what you have is actually sodium atoms and chlorine atoms joined together. So table salt is a compound, chlorine is an element.

atoms are the smallest material in this universe, everything in this universe is made of it, it is the universal building blocks of everything, an element is just a group of atoms with the same exact property, atomic weight etc, everything... it can be one atom, can be thousands, but it is still the same element
