primarily used as an appetite suppressant. It is typically prescribed for individuals who are at increased medical risk because of their weight, as opposed to cosmetic weight loss. Phentermine is sold either as an immediate-release formulation (Adipex®) or as a slow-release resin (Ionamin®, Duromine® in Australia and New Zealand).
Side effects
Generally, phentermine appears to be relatively well tolerated.[1] Common side effects include headache and dry mouth. It can produce side effects consistent with its mechanisms of action - the most major being:tachycardia, increased alertness, but the incidence and magnitude of these appear to be less than with the amphetamines. Because phentermine acts through sympathomimetic pathways, on a long-term basis users of the drug may develop euphoria and a psychological addiction.
Contraindications
Phentermine should generally be avoided in patients with:
Agitation
Allergy/Hypersensitivity to other sympathomimetic amines
Atherosclerosis
Cardiovascular disease
Glaucoma
High blood pressure
Hyperthyroidism
History of drug abuse
Additionally, this drug should not be used at the same time or within 14 days following the use of monoamine oxidase inhibitors.
[edit]
Internet notoriety
Recently, phentermine has drawn the ire of many internet users. The medication is one of the most commonly used terms in spam e-mails and bulletin board postings by bots.

I am currently taking phentermine to help with weight loss post surgery. I have lost a total of 30 lbs in the past 2 months. I don't seem to have any side effects.Just make sure you are taking it under a doctors supervision. I do know people who have taken it with no success, so results will vary. Combine it with a moderate diet (I just cut out junk foods) and a little exercise and you should be good to go!

yes, its a safe appetite suppresent prescribed by a doctor or you can order it over the internet. originally is was prescribed as fen-phen which the other drug was a narcotic and caused a lot of problems for ppl so they withdrew it from the market for weight loss and are now prescribing phenterimine alone and there are no problems associated with it. my sister took this and lost close to 80 lbs in 6 months and kept all but 10 lbs off and this is 3 yrs later.

A prescription from your doctor only costs $30. for a month supply. You need to have lab work done before taking this appetite supressant, it does have side affects. It can cause liver damage and heart/ respiratiory failure if you take it and have a history of some illnesses. It will keep you WIDE AWAKE for a day or two and cause rapid heart beat, and sweating. You will loose your appetite but you have to eat in order to not get weak and sick. I took it for 30 days and lost 2 lbs. NOT worth it.

It's one of the two ingredients in a now illegal weight-loss product called "Phen-fen" (the other was ephedrine). Several people died.
As to it's adverse effects when used on it's own, if any, I don't know.

Yeah ... it was part of a dr. prescribed diet craze back in the early to mid 90's... The phen-phen diet... it was a two pill prescription... I know one of the pills was took of the market because of it causing heart problems and I think a few deaths... I would suggest you talk to your DR. or google it yourself... Oh... I took it and it worked and I am still here...

I have and it really does cease your appetite. However if you any type of blood pressure issues, avoid at all cost. It has a tendency to raise the blood pressure.
