1 byte=8 bits
1 kilobyte(kb)=1024 bytes
1 megabyte(mb)=1024 kilobytes or ~1,000,000 bytes
1 gigabyte(gb)=1024 megabytes or~1,000,000,000 bytes
1 TERABYTE (TB)= 1024 gigabutes or ~1,000,000,000,000 bytes
1 petabyte (pb)=1024 terabytes or~1,000,000,000,000,000 bytes
scientists believe thgat the theoretical limit of current magnetic recording technology is 527 terabytes per square inch, and hope to achieve that by 2009 for consumer electronics, just think, a 527 terabyte ipod, that is equal to about 200,000,000 songs!!!!

1 TB = 1024 GB
1,099,511,627,776 bytes = 1024^4 or 2^40. (This capacity may be expressed unambiguously as a tebibyte.)

1,024 B (bytes) = 1KB (kilobyte)
1,024 KB (kilobytes) = 1 MB (megabyte)
1,024 MB (megabytes) = 1 GB (gigabyte)
1,024 GB (gigabytes) = 1 TB (terabyte)
However, on new computers these days, they will often claim a new computer might have, say, 500 GB (almost 1/2 TB) of hard drive space. As of a couple years ago, they often started measuring 1GB as 1,000 MB in their ads (you can see it in the fine print at the bottom). Therefore, if you see a computer ad that says the computer has a 1 TB harddrive, read the fine print... it probably had a hard drive that has 1,000 GB of space on it (not 1,024 GB). Generally speaking this is a minor difference, but it's worth mentioning. For most people in casual home use, 1 TB is not necessary (my 4-year old computer has 40 GB (0.04 TB), and I'm just now using it all up).
