Me and my mom are having a little trouble on them for my homework, I tried them for hours, but a lot of the step-by-step example problems don't relate to the problems I'm struggling with.

You can try mathematica, it is not free and it does not factor polynomials step by step. But it is the best software available. Fact is that people who use these softwares already know how to factor polynomials. It is best you learn the hard way - do it by yourself. Consult your teacher if needed.
