A democrat is an idealist. They are "Dreamers" so to speak and believe that anything can be changed for the better or that "Everyone" can get along. "Fixers" The type to leap without looking and then deal with whatever happens.
A republican is a realist. They are stuck in certain ways and are more "Conservative" with their actions. They THINK before leaping and often refuse to leap because leaping hasn't been popular in the past. They believe in change but are reluctant to let go of much rope.
I just turned 30. When I was 20 I was a flaming liberal. Over time I've slid down to the moderate level of the line. I keep thinking that as I grow older and realize how hard it is to make the world a better place I become more complacent and more of a "realist". But, I think that's giving up on hope...and I hope that I don't lose sight of the hunger and ambition that democracy has always birthed in me.
To be a liberal means to believe that all people are created equal and deserve the right to freedom. Creed, color, orientation. Political parties today are defined by "Who believes in abortion" and "Who doesnt" - that's not how it really works. AT all. Not even a little bit. But it's a nice tool for people to use at voting time for the poor souls who have no desire to learn what political ideologies are all about.
(I am more liberal than conservative and I have an amazing God I love and serve and all the morals that go along with it. My God says not to judge people... )

Both Parties have evolved throughout the years, I would say neither are now in their original form.
Today it could be said that the Republican Party is very big on Free Market Capitalism, Self Accountability, National Security.
The Democratic Party has become the American version of the Communist Party. They hold that it is the Governments responsibility to subsidize and fascilitate a lack of motivation in it's people. Democrats have an Elitist attitude towards it's citizens.
Their answer to teen pregnancy is not to teach children the value of saving themselves for Marriage. But to fascilitate bad behaviour with the tools, and Child Sacrifice for their sins.
Their record with Minorities is incredible. Continuously they make grandious promises of prosperity for minorities and have yet to deliver, yet like sheep minorities seem to buy the empty words because so many of them are not willing to try the Republican approach which actually demands their own participation and refuses to do it all for them.
Republicans for the most part expect the downtrodden to take some ownership in their own future for it is their belief that this is the only path to true healing.

Two political parties in the American political System. They both have good points and bad points. The Conservative Right tends to always back the republican party. The more liberal left back the Democrats. Our country is being ran by the republican party. the present and both the House and the senate is controlled by them.

Democrats are generally thought to be liberals, one democratic beliefs is for individual state laws to be stronger than federal law. When I was growing up my mama always told me that the republicans were for the rich and democrats were for the poor and the middle class, although, you never here this in political debates openly said, I believe it.

Problem is that the platforms of both do not follow Conservative or liberal philosophies
Which makes it almost impossable for a person to really be either one.

The answer is simple when a democrat holds out his hand it's to help someone up. When a republican holds out his hand it's to keep someone down.

Democrat: good. More left wing (but, compared to Europe, still rather right wing). Way better for financial balance, environment and poor people.
Democrat = more equally pay checks for people.
If you don't care about the environment, you don't care about what world we live in. And the (grand)children will have to do the clean up. Which by then, is WAY more expensive then to take good care of the environment in the first place anyway.
Democrat = higher taxes. BUT: only for the rich!
Some people would say: this scares the rich people out of the country. Well, let them. Do you really want such egocentric people as neighbours?
Taxes are needed anyway. We need to spend more money in space, so people can live on other (dwarf) planets and moons.
We also need to rise the taxes on fuel, since the current low price tells everyone to use huge, fuel inefficient SUV's and trucks. As a result, hurricanes get bigger, and other great weather differences will be the result, like suddenly draughts.
Republican: bad, because they are very right wing. They are egocentric.
Republicans act this way: poor people will get support from rich people, or say: "even only CAN get support if there ARE rich people" (so that they are able to support the poor). However, in real life, that's not working AT ALL. Poor people stay poor.
Republican = great difference between poor and rich.
Republican = spending way (hundreds of billions) more then what comes in! In every normal household, this would be considered very bad practice. For some reason, peope take it from their government, though.
Typical result of the republican way: poor people in New Orleans didn't even had a car to evacuate.
Republican = having no shame whatsoever to use fraud to win elections.
Republican = have low taxes. That just bad for the environment. Plundering of resources is hardly taxed, so you get poor products. A manufacturer will/can say: 'just make another one if it breaks... We can do that, the use of resources is hardly taxed anyway!'. This way you get poor products while rapidly using up precious recources (minerals, etc.).
Republican = having as many children as possible (as if we don't have too much people on our planet already).
Republican = shoot first, then talk.
Republican = if people can't care for themselves: bad luck... We don't care.
Republican = poor people can't get health care (unless it's given by the rich. Even so, who gave them the right to have power over the poor)? Richness is mostly at the costs of others.)
Republican = if you get handicapped, you're in bad luck... Then you can't provide for yourself anymore.
Republican = if you get laid of (which is easier having a republican government), you're in bad luck... Then you can't provide for yourself anymore.

Two sides of the same coin. The few differences they have are blown out of proportion compared to the huge number of things they have in common.
Both seem equally effective at growing the government at taxpayer's expense. Both seem subject to ridiculous scandal. Both seem to forget the promises made at election time as soon as accountability and decision making are required.....
