During the counterculture era (1960s-1970s), younger generations opposed authority and were very much at odds with society's accepted belief systems and standards of living. In the counterculture movement (fueled by the Vietnam War), social conservatives were deemed "social repressionists."
The Paradigm Shift exploded into innovative ideas about religion, society and spirituality, notwithstanding traditional Western ideologies.
Youth's opposition to authority may not have always been in the best interest of humanity; however, it was the Paradigm shift that led to revolutional changes that improved racial tensions and relationships, opened communication lines to outside nations, and ended the Vietnam War.
Today, the shift seems to be the polarized political positions with little "middle ground" between those viewed as liberal and thos viewed as conservative. This polarization of liberal conservative has branched out into the social arena involving gay rights, energy, evangelical religious groups.

There are different types of paradigm shifts. Some are great, some are small. Some are more regarding spirituality and some are more regarding material things.
Examples:
Great Spiritual Paradigm Shift:
The Hare Krsna movement begining in the NorthEast of the USA. Which is a part of another Hare Krsna revival happening around five hundred years ago. The ancient teaching of India according to the Vaisnava perspective were translated and presented in a format easier to understand than any in history. This had great influence on society.
Small Spiritual Paradigm Shift:
I ran away from home to join the Hare Krsna movement when I turned eighteen years of age. This caused a major shift in my usual living norms.
Great Material Paradigm Shift:
The creation of and use of the atom bomb.
The meltdown of Chernobyl was an international catastrophe affecting people's minds world over.
Small Material Paradigm Shift:
When I started driving a taxi it turned out to be the longest duration of steady income in my entire life.

Hmmm ...
Well, by definition, a paradigm shift has to be different from the current mainstream thinking ...
A big change for the better would be if people would accept the idea that we could all live together in peace. That would mean giving up the whole concept of nations, and living together as one people, on one planet.
Peace ... now that would be a MAJOR paradigm shift!

No real offense meant, to you, but I see something far too often in this category.
Why must so many relate Philosophy to Religion?
I'm well educated, have a high IQ, and belong to a brotherhood of clergy, but cannot fathom why so many equate Philosophies, so narrowly, by tagging THOUGHT onto religion so specifically.
I grant that WARS are most often fought in the name of some GOD, and that people develop theories about existance, based of learning related to a creator,,,But even Godless people have philosophies, beliefs, considerations about SHIFTS, and futures.
The best lesson learned, is that CHALLENGING is valid, and beliefs are cyclical.

The definition of 'near and dear' is changing from fixed to variable. Whoever whenever serves my purpose is my near and dear at that time. Paradigm shift could well lead to disaster too !
