He wouldn't want that I don't think. He's a true leader and gentleman and he will a great VP and will only help the Red Wing organization even more. Still chokes me up to think #19 will no longer be on the ice! Go Wings!

What about GORDIE HOWE?!!!!!

Steve Yzerman was a captain for 20 years for the Wings - and
a good captain - and as captain his team brought the Cup back
to Detroit. And so it's no disrespect but -

But if Gordie Howe were on the team, no way in heck Yzerman
would have been the captain of such a team.

You can't really retire the C because the C stands for more than just being a great player. Giving someone else the C doesn't mean that it's taking anything away from Yzerman, it just means that someone else needs to lead the team on the ice. And many D-men have held the C.....Pronger is just one of them.

Steve Yzerman was just named Vice President of the Red Wings....whooo hooo!
The should make him Vice President of the USA.
Nick Lidstrom is now captain...I thought the captain was usually on offense.
Both are deserving

This can be debated forever. He was definitely the classiest. He was great all around. Faceoffs, defensively offensively. Pure skill it was Lemieux. If you're going by points it's Gretzky. Gordie Howe never had a 50 goal season. There are too many criteria to make that assessment! It's your personal opinion!

stevie y will always be remembered for hos leadership of the wings, however, i tend to agree with the Gordie Howe statement, no disrepect to stevie, but gordie howe set the bar for players, and was later smashed by one, wayne gretzky. I love Stevie Y, i think he will do awesome as VP for the wings, sadly though i believe the wings may suffer this season without him and shanahan.Luckly they have a excellent center in Datsuyk, look for bigger numbers (if he stays healthy) from him.
