Thirteen months ago, I had both (and a now 15 month old son). Today, I have nothing except that I have my life - which is the most important thing. I may not have deserved either but in the throes of my disease - I married and I bought a $600K house that I couldn't afford.
The answer may be cliche but life is not a cliche. Whether I regain my wife and/or my son is a different story. Whether I can ever work again or buy a big house - what does it matter? All those material things do not go into the grave with you - they remain behind to be divvied up in probate by jealous relatives and the like.
