Waiters get paid a low hourly wage, because of tips so the big the tip the better. How do you get tips? You do all you can for the person you are serving.

As a former server...I have never done this. Some people hover, thinking that they're going to get a better tip. On the other hand, he might have found you attactive.

Some waiters/waitressess just want to be attentive. Maybe they don't want you think they're not being attentive enough. A good look in the eyes and saying "Thanks a lot, but we're okay right now" will usually send the message. Oh and don't forget to tip your waiter 15% to 20% of the bill before any discounts are added. Enjoy.

few reasons 1) the restuarant is dead and they have nothing better to do 2) their manager is on them like dogs if they dont look busy 3) they are just plain annoying or 4) they are trying to give you the best service possible because that is how they make their living and they are trying to get the best tip they can so they can put clothes on their backs and food on the table.

Maybe they are too close sometimes but I'll tell you what these people are just trying to make sure you have everything you need to enjoy your dining experience and don't have to want for anything or look around for them. That way you don't get impatient "wanting" for something. I hope you remember to take care of them as they ARE taking care of you. Remember if you can't afford to tip then you can't afford to go out to eat.

They only hover because the aren't good enough at timing things or being discreet about the fact that they need to check on you.

they hover over you because even though you don't need them right now, you probably will in 10 seconds... and then you will b*tch because they weren't there 10 seconds ago and you'll only leave 15% tip... and sometimes they're just bored so they are trying to help you and be there if you need them

I guess they think they're being efficient, but I'm with you: it bugs me. Remember: the client is boss. Tell him or her, politely, that to be watched eating makes you feel uncomfortable or that you need more privacy, etc.
WAITPEOPLE OUT THERE: THE BEST OF YOUR PROFESSION ARE NOT SEEN WHEN NOT NEEDED. NEVER BE TOO FAR FROM CONTACT WITH YOUR CLIENTS BUT DON'T LURK. THANK YOU.
Excellent question.

It depends on the restaurant management and the "people skills" of the server.

Either they don't have anything to do or they want you to finish and leave so they can collect their tip and re-seat the table.
