The terms have gotten so mixed up and used so generally that it is confusing. The original meaning for driveway was an entry way upto a house or building. You would drive up this path and park giving rise to the term park on the driveway. Parkways were usually roads that ran through parks or roads leading to parks. So you drive on a parkway. Many parks have gone out of existence but the name of the road that led to it remains. Sometimes roads are called parkways just to give a status to it.

Because if you drove on a driveway , you would run into a house...and if you parked on a parkway you would get run over by cars, then you wouldn't have a house...... Hope this helps.. and please don't go and prove me right...
