Damn right they wear off. All they do is mask the pain. You still feel uncomfortable, you can definitely feel the contractions. It does help through the contractions/labor.

When I was in labor I had two shots of Demerol, two epidurals and a spinal. I was in Labor for 11 hours.

From personal experience--the epidural wore off. I didn't mind though. The hard part in labor is the contractions, not pushing. By the time you are pushing you won't care what you feel. You'll just want that baby out. If you are considering the epidural I strongly suggest it. While it doesn't always last, it does keep the pain from contractions away--which is the hard part. Good Luck and Congratulations!

Not necessarily true. W/my first pregnancy the epidural never wore off and my labor was long because I wasn't dilating and I was numb even when I was delivering the baby. I knew when I was having a contraction because I was told when to push. But w/my second baby the epidural wore off from the right side of my body and then the dr told me to lay on my right side. Once I laid on my right side, that side was numb and then my left side was numb. LOL! Luckily this time around I dilated much faster than my first labor and I still felt pains after the epidural did take effect. (very little though) and I knew exactly when to push and that made my labor much easier.

If you have the epidural around 4 or 5 cm dialated, it should not "wear off". If you just start going into labor and haven't gotten to 4 cm's yet, it may wear off. But, the painful part of labor isn't the actual delivery of the baby, it is the contractions.

Contractions and labour are the same. The epidural is usually given when you're already a bit dilated to help with the labour pains which are contractions of the uterus trying to exp ell the baby. Once the babies head is crowning, the rest is easy, you push one sharp pain and its over. Most of the time you still have some left from the epidural, don't worry. Attitude is what counts, tell yourself this will all be over soon, do your breathing and you'll be fine.

Depends on the timing of the epidural. It doesn't last forever... so if you have a really long labor and have the epidural too soon... I guess there is a chance it could wear off. Talk to the obgyn and they will help with the timing of it all.

They are both right, I had an epidural but my labor went longer than expected and my epidural ran out. I do not remember the pain of birth just the contractions and the after pains when sitting..... gotta love the sitz bath!

it depends on how long your labor is. my labor was 38 hours long so yes, it wore off before the pushing, but my epidural lasted about 8 hours i think, and that really helped me get thru the contractions, which are really the worst part. but your labor might not last as long, and it may still be working when you have your baby.

I was induced, I had three shots of demoral and one epidural. You still feel the pressure and not the pain. If your labor is very long, it will wear off. It only lasts for a few hours.

It depends on how long you take in labor! If you're only taking a couple hours, then no it won't. If it takes you over a day, then there's probably a small chance. But the most pain that occurs during contractions anyways. Once you're in active labor it doesn't hurt in the same way, and you don't really need meds for it.
