On the one hand, we need to establsh common ground, together; on the other, we simultaneously need time and space to be ourselves, apart. Some people need to focus on maintaining each culture's heritage and culture intact; others need to focus on how forms can blend and make new ones that owe a little something to both. We need to realize our commonalities as human beings, and we also at the same time need to celebrate our variety.

We need to remember that the motto E PLURIBUS UNUM - "out of many, one" - has a flip side: PLURES IN UNO - "many within one"

Not easy, but there it is.

Equality is obtained not by blending or assimilating cultures but by respecting each culture and the differences. In America you are an American first and then whatever you want to be, regardless of culture. The cultural differences add richness to the American culture.
