In very simple terms--the RAM in your system is being strained by the call being drawn down on it by the programs and stuff you are running.......
There ARE a couple of things that you can do to improve this dilema---first is to spend the money and purchase the hardware memory (RAM) in your system---with todays programing and the mega draw on RAM it is not unwise to upgrade to around 1 GB in this department for the kind of responses from your equiptment that you are probably expecting-----
The other thing is---go to downloads.com and search out a program called FreeRam XP Pro--- it is a freeware program and --when you run it---it will free up RAM on your machine when it drops too low to perform properly and THIS will help a lot !!!!!
Hope this helps you somewhat -----???--------

You might also want to scan for adware/malware/spyware, viruses, or trojans. There could be something running that's taken control of your system and overloaded your resources.
In terms of too many things running, you could also do a quick visual of all the taskbar icons in the lower righthand corner. If you have a lot lining up right after you boot, you've got too many things starting up.

It could be as simple as needing to restart if you tend to leave the computer on all the time, or if you usually just hibernate instead of shutting down.
If that doesn't help, try this:
"To change the size of the virtual memory paging file"
http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/sysdm_advancd_perform_change_vmpagefile.mspx?mfr=true

V memory isn't actually computer memory, it's free space on your hard drive. If you start to run out of actual memory, the computer starts to use this free space. Increase your RAM or the size of your swapfile/pagefile. Clean up your hard disk to free space as well.
