If you are using windows xp, you can block other users from seeing or changing your files by making your files privite, this can be done when creating a password. If you want to hide your files from other computers on a network, right click on the file, click sharing and security and make sure the "share this file on the network" box isnt ticked.

1. Remove all the share including the administrative shares on your partitions
2. Turn off all the unnecessary services running on your systems.
3. Use a difficult password and keep the password change once in two weeks.
4. Use a firewall.
5. Use a file integrity checker so that you can find out that if anybody intrudes into your machine and make any change to the files.
6. Don't open any unsolicited emails that may contain some malicious programs.
7. Run only programs that you know well
