It means that a child is similar (usually in manner or habit) to the parent. More often than not used in a negative sense. For example, if a child is arrested on a drug charge when the child's parents have a history of drug offenses, people might say, "the apple doesn't fall far from the tree."

The fruit is an expression of the tree's energy, time and effort. What The tree produces is a direct reflection of what it is. Apples don't come off oak trees. The fruit is not broadcast far from the tree but will be in the neighborhood of what it is. Sometimes this is good sometimes it is bad. But The tree is known by the fruit it bears and the fruit is known by what tree it comes off of.

It's kind of the same as "like father like son." It basically means that your children/parents/family resemble you physically and in their behaviors. Sadly, it is often used with a negative connotation, like if a teenager gets in trouble the principal asks the parents if there are problems at home and says, "well you know, the apple doesn't fall far from the tree." Hope this answers your question.

It represents something. Like the apple is a fruit of the tree right? The family is represented by a tree and their kid(s) is represented by the apple. So no matter what the kid is going to have a lot of traits from that family.

The phrase means that people tend not to move very far away from their home or never leave where they grew up. Its usually because the home usually means comfort or that one's family is always close and irrespective of how far one apple roams, it still calls the 'apple tree' home.
