There are a lot of things that you will never be able to replace, family photos, memorabilia, keepsakes, heirlooms. We had a fire in October of 2002 and lost everything including our only vehicle. I worked at a major department store at the time and when someone would bring their items to the checkout I would almost cry thinking "I used to have that " or " I lost mine in a fire". You will spend the first several months trying to remember everything you once had. In about a year you will have thought of everything and after that you will begin to heal.

First you have to remember to give thanks for what you did not lose, your life and that of your family.Next you will slowly begin to replace things like clothes and personal hygiene products. Then you can replace the big items like appliances , bedding and linens.People that have never been through losing everything to a fire don't realize what you lose such as food and toothbrushes. The small things can get to you.I feel so very sorry for you.

Go to family members and get everyone to help you replace as many pictures as possible. Get help through the Red Cross with getting started on replacing some of the little things. As soon as you are capable, buy yourself somethings that you have always wanted but never got, you deserve it. I pray for your sake that you had insurance because the sooner you get in a normal situation the sooner you began to get over the shock. We did not have insurance and it took me about three years to let all those material things go. I only think of it now when I see a house fire or come across something like your story. I wish you the best.

Hopefully your local fire dept. contacted the red cross, they usually give you a packet with I believe a little money to get needed items, and some contact information. They usually help after all fires if called upon. Although it sounds bad everything is materialistic, meaning you are ok and everyone got out ok, stuff can be replaced..people can't

It takes time....(know from a personal experience) and my niece is going through it right now too. But be thankful that you are alive - and give your dog a great big bone! The sad thing is losing family pictures, movies, etc.
