This will be even easier than opening the hood.

The 8th digit of the vin for the '92 V8 options are as follows

E - 305ci Throttle Body Injection 170hp 240 ftlbs trq
F - 305ci Tuned Port Injection 230hp 300ftlbs trq
8 - 350ci Tuned Port Injection 240hp 345ftlbs trq

Can't remember off hand what the 8th is for V6, but if it's not one of the for mentioned codes it's a Six Banger.

They were available with a 5.0 V8 or a 3.1 V6. In addition to counting the spark plugs, you should be able to find some marking under the hood which indicates one of those two engines.

Other than "counting the sparkplugs" which you really cant see all of them or "look at the distributor" in which case what do you do when it doesn't have one. The easiest way to tell is to pop the hood and look at it. The one with the V6 will look like it has no engine while the one with the V8 will look like it has no room in the engine compartment. Pretty easy, huh.

I think the RS only had the v6 but as everyone else said, count the spark plugs or get your vin number decoded. Another option is to look at your build sheet.

Sit behind the wheel, start your engine, and listen.

If you feel like you might wet yourself because the engine sounds so insanely powerful, then you have a v8.

If it's just kinda nice sounding, then it's a v6.

You should know how to tell the difference to be allowed to operate this vehicle!

If you don't want to look under the hood, go to the CARFAX website. They offer a free vin decoder in which you can find out specific information about your vehicle's specs. This of course only gives you the correct information if your vehicle has the original engine in it.

Other than that, look under the hood, take a look at your distributor and see how many spark plug wires our coming out of it and going to your engine. That will be the number of cylinders you have.

When you count the wires there will be 1 extra. The one in the middle is the coil wire, leaving either 6 or 8. What you count will be the number of cylinders you have.

look at the sticker under your hued on the fan cover or on the top of the hoed it will say something like 4.3 V8 or 3.2 V6 or something like that not all cars have wires or sparck plugs were you can see them but you can look if you want

a v-8 and a v-6 both have two heads, that is why it is called a "v". I agree with everyone else, count the plugs or plug wires.
