Well, the best advice on that is write about something you know.
This will allow you to talk confidently about it. Also, this will help you, because if you get lost during your speech...you already know something about the topic. So, it won't be hard to keep going.

Never ever choose a topic that is too complex.

I remember hearing a classmate due an informative speech about atoms and molecules. This was horrible. He pronounced words incorrectly and gave false information, because he did not understand the information himself.

Stick with what you know!

Definitely, Talk about what you know and what interests you.

Here are some ideas, But if you talk about what you enjoy, the audience will read that in your presentation.
Science.
Info and Drugs in America and the War on Drugs is always available.

AIDS in Africa and what training/teaching can we give to prevent the spread in their continent. In Africa, they believe for a man to get rid of AIDS, he has to sleep with four women. So teaching is really needed. (This was from a speech I heard in 2001).

Teenage Pregnancy - why the high numbers and what can be done.

On-line predators- how they get you. And what can a person do to protect theirselves.

The environment - the quality of air / water as compared to X years ago. Are EPA, Clean Air Act, Clean Water ACt, and state and local laws doing a good job?

A local or state election coming up. Present both candidates and their platforms (sounds boring already, unless your into Political Science).

Youth and Drinking / smoking - the side effects- short term (acute) and long term (chronic). How many that start a young age are addicited.

Good Luck

(Depending upon your scope of "possibilities") you could research any SCIENTIFIC study or even go out on the far limb of the tree and study any form of GOVERNMENT and how it effected or effects the earth. - By "informative", I bet your teacher / professor is trying to encourage you to "think outside the box" in search of your topic.
