I have plenty of fleece sweaters that have been washed too many times, and they are no longer soft. I was wondering if this was a result of pilling, and therefore could be reversed with one of those fabric shavers I read about in another question, or if the softness of my fleece is forever lost?

Only one reply and it doesn't answer my question, does no one know if I can REVERSE the effects of over-washing on fleece?

The pilling happens when the soft fuzzy fibers tangle together. If you use a fabric shaver, the fleece will look smooth again. But it won't regain the velvety softness, because the fuzzy fibers will be gone. Fabric soften helps, but unfortunately it can't restore the original feel. Believe me, I've tried every method!

Try turning your fleece garments wrong side out before you wash them. If possible, avoid washing them in cold water - warm is best.
