How hard is it to drive around them?
A couple of hours ago I saw a squirrel that had been hit in the middle of the road, and it was still alive and moving, but it's probably been run over a dozen more times by now. This wasn't even an extremely busy road, and the speed limit is only 45 there. They could easily have driven around the squirrel. I hope they get run over themselves.

I have been driving for 12 years and have never had an accident, nor have I ever hit an animal. If you are not capable of avoiding hitting animals, YOU SHOULD NOT BE ON THE ROAD. Do you need to get your eyesight checked? Are you talking on the phone and eating while you drive? Are you just stupid? (That would be my guess). Raccoons cannot run fast. They dart out into the road? Yeah, well, so do children. Is it OK to hit children just so that you don't scratch your SUVs?

I couldn't take it home, you abject moron, it was already half dead and partly stuck to the road where it had been crushed. It was moving its tail, but it was dying already.
This is a small road by my house. I have never seen an accident on that stretch of road. There isn't a lot of traffic there. No one was in danger of dying if they swerved out of the way. How far do you have to swerve to avoid hitting a squirrel, anyway? Most people are just stupid assholes.

I'm sure nobody is aiming.

you should see the deer that get nailed in Wisconsin.

Squirrels are just rats with a good P.R. anyway.

Generally speaking, people don't run over animals on purpose. It is very hard to avoid an animal when they run out in front of a vehicle and once you get to be a driver you will understand what I mean. It is also far more dangerous to swerve in the road at any speed and doing so could result in the death of another person if you collide with another car. It is terribly hard to see animals in pain and I particularly hate seeing cats on the side of the road, especially if they are still hanging on and clearly in pain. If you see one, call the local animal shelter, otherwise, there is not much else you can do. I had a friend when I was younger whose sister died after her car went into a river while avoiding a goat. You have to decide which life you put more value on.

I hit a rabbit At 110 kilometres (the legal limit) an hour, darted out in front of me I had no chance to miss it. I hit a bird with the antenna on my car, sliced the poor thing in half. I had no idea it was there. At least I stopped and checked. I would have never left a squirrel dying in the middle of the road the least I would do would be to put it out of it's misery.

Some animals seem to want to commit suicide. They run right out in the road at the last second. I have had this happen with 3 raccoons and 4 birds. Thank God my son was there because once a man in a parking lot informed me that there was a bird stuck in the grill. EWWW!!!!! We drove to some remote place and my son got it off so I never had to look at it!

People are busy and in a hurry and also in a trance while driving.

Usually that don't want to swerve because they might lose control of the car.

I think most people are ashamed of hitting animals, but lawsuits for bad driving are an even bigger nightmare to many of us.

the first time it was hit it was most likely an accident.. after that people may either be speeding and dont see it untill its too late or see it that it is already dead and dont want to risk themselves getting in a car accident for a dead or a soon to be dead squirrel.

I have a friend who runs over them on purpose and that makes me angry, especially today when I was in the car with him and his sister. They are my close friends and was surprised that they thought it was funny and fun to do that. They are wild animals, not to be used for our entertainment! :( People who run over squirrels, or anything should have a heart and its hard to say that about my friends. Usually, if you grow up around parents and family members who run over squirrels, etc they would probably do the same thing. While I grew up the opposite with watching squirrels, birds, etc, and my parents being nature and animal lovers, I learned it brings me joy and relaxation whenever I'm around them and when I see someone trying to kill them, or hurt them, it breaks my heart and pisses me off! Especially if they are young, or baby squirrels.

you obviously don't drive. You can drive around the squirrel if it's just standing in one place, but most squire ls are pretty fast, and they dart out onto the road without you having the opportunity to stop, or safely avoid them.

Squirrels can run very fast. But not always fast enough to avoid cars. Then they are not so fast anymore. Then cars are too fast and people aren't really paying attention. So sad.
