These are the definitions I go by.

Transgendered is someone who takes on the behavior of the opposite gender(including clothing, mannerism and speech patterns) and may take on some artificial means to enhance the physical attributes of the opposite gender such as hormones in men that will grow breast tissue. However they stop short of surgical reassignment. They may or may not live all the time as their chosen gender. Most I know are heterosexual.

Transsexuals are those who do all the above but who go through gender reassignment in a permanent and for the most part, non reversible way. They always live as their chosen gender, as it is their true gender.

Crossdressers are typically people who dress to some degree in the opposite genders clothing and take on some mannerism, usually in an exaggerated way because it becomes a sexual focus in puberty. Many times in heterosexual men, this is used in humiliation play as a sexual stimulant.

Transvestites start wearing women's or men's clothing in childhood, its not wrapped up in their sexual responses and in most cases, the person is heterosexual. Its a stress reliever and somewhat of a comfort inducing practice.

a cross dresser is some one who likes to wear opposite genders clothing, a transvestite is a straight person that gets their sexual kicks by dressing up in other genders clothing, transgendered is someone who feels like they are the other gender, and a transexual is the same as a transgendered person except they had a sex change and they are now fully the other gender... I am transgendered, I know about these things

At times they are interchangable, like when referring to the GLBT community, it means Gay Lesbian Bisexual Transgender. A transexual has had gender reassignment surgery; a transgender has not, but may in the future. A transvestite is one who dresses up in the opposite sex's clothing.

Transgender = A male brain "trapped" inside of a woman's body, or a woman brain "trapped" inside of a male's body.

Transsexual = If one decides to get a sex-change, then they can be called a transsexual.

If I'm not mistaken- a transexual is someone who cross dresses, but won't surgically change their bodies.

Transgenders do surgically change.
