He is great. He's not lazy, he just had a bad year in 2005, because he decided to not compete in Montreal, then got a disease, with fever & bronchitis, and when he started to get better he broke his right hand. It's not his fault.
Ian is one the greatest swimmers ever. Yes, he was beaten by VDH and Alex Popov, but just in some competions that are not his own specialty (400m freestyle & 200m freestyle).
Ian won the so-called "race of the century", 200m freestyle in Athens 2004, defeating VDH & Phelps. Plus another gold, one silver and bronze. Moreover, VDH is a great swimmer, but Ian is much better. He won much more.
When he was just 17, the Thorpedo won 3 golds and 2 silvers in Sydney 2000 (Olympics).
He's the current world record holder for long course in the 200m freestyle and 400m freestyle.
He is still undefeated in the 400m long course freestyle, since 1997 or 1998.
You should read his biography and you will discover how many medals he collected in his carrer!
Some people don' t really understand that this guy is amazing.
They would like him to be 100% fit 365 days a year. He's not a computer or a machine. They should really respect him and appreciate all the efforts he puts in improving in his sport.

hes good when he actually trains. he is a bit strange.. and it seems like he is only in his "best form" every second or third competition. Maybe he's lazy?
