I think that ancient hunter they dug out of the glacier had a backpack.
Certainly mothers carried their babies on their backs when traveling.
It's as old as man is, I'd guess.

It wasn't invented. It was developed. It came from the knapsack. A piece of cloth where you would carry your stuff in.
