Contact your local welfare/food stamp office (a.k.a. social services). They keep informed of as many programs as possible to provide as much information as possible to the public in one visit to streamline the process of figuring out what people could be eligible for. That way you aren't running all over town having to repeat your situation unneccesarily to every agency in the phone book. Even if they are not administering a particular program they can tell you where and how to apply and provide contact phone numbers. There are different types of housing assistance administered by different agencies (long term, emergency, supplemental, etc.) If you only check with HUD or with your city you will not get all the information and may miss something that could really help you. Usually the city and HUD only keep informed about the programs they personally administer.
