All new drivers need a tank! You are going to have your first wreck, and that don't usually take very long, so all the metal around you to protect your a-s would be good. All the airbags you can get too!! Have fun!

dont buy something new or right off the lot. dont spend alot of money either. i started officially driving last month. i had my car 2 weeks and a lady bumped my back bumper. minimal damage but i was still mad. then a week or two after that i rear ended someone, i had about 300 bucks worth of damage to my car and none to hers. i was so glad it was just that much because i didnt want my insurance to go up. get something reliable that will last through the years and wont give you loads of trouble. do your research on the car/suv that you are looking at. check kbb or nada.com or edmunds.com to. ask a few friends about their cars is also a good resource. i hear toyota and hondas are good cars too.

Honda Civic
Assuming that you're paying for it yourself. If so, it's cheap, very reliable, high gas mileage, cheap maintenance, comfortable.
