It's mostly to evaluate the backups. I went to a pre-season game once and each team had about 6 of their regular players dressed. I was basically watching an AHL game.

Baseball has a 162 game regular season and play roughly 30 preseason games.. NBA has an 82 game schedule, and play roughy 12 to 15 pre season games.. even the NFL, with their 16 game season have 4 preseason games.. In most of those the games, the guys who have spots 'sewn up' play sparringly, while those on the edge of making it or getting cut, get alot more playing time..

It's basically over money and I don't see the players or owners wanting to reduce the amount of games in a season. The real profit occurs during a long playoff run. For me, I'd like to see a 4 game exhibition season, no more than a 60 game regular season, and a 3 round playoff system.

Although it's a fact that teams need pre-season games to tune up, for the most part they are a source of revenue for the teams. Local promoters handle the details of the neutral site games and then hand over a cheque, so they are pure profit for the teams.

its to test any prospects, draft picks, and players that were playing in the minors. It also gives non-nhl cities a chance to see nhl hockey.
however the nhl, technically calls their pre-season "training camp", for the reason that they are training their younger players.

Why does baseball have spring training when they play like 162 games? They do this to get them playing against teams in a faster speed then you will get in practice. It may not mean anything but it gets them back up to speed some and gives them their legs back.

To determine who fills out the roster, you probably know 15 or so of the guys year-to-year but there are going to be some rookies who might make the club.

Exactly!
I think it's to gouge fans as they charge a fortune even for pre-season. If you buy season's tickets you are forced to buy the dopey pre-season games, too.
The entire regular season is pretty much meaningless and the schedule sucks (we in Vancouver are stuck with 8 games ea. vs. the Mild and the Lames...yuck!...plus no Crosby again!)
