i think for some people the meds are the only answer.some on a temporary basis..to get over a rough patch, readjust.but some of us have serious chemical imbalances and will be life long users of antidepressants.one of my concerns are the new ones..unknown history of side effects both long and short term.i resisted paxil for yrs because i read pages and pages of potential side effects.turns out that paxil is one that actually helps me,minimum side effects.zoloft made me barf sick on and off all day everyday.others gave me dry mouth and jitters.remeron put 30 lbson me in a few weeks that took over a yr to shed, even after i quit taking it.
to many people pop a pill cures all..it wont.it may improve quality of life.or it may ruin your life.
same with add or adhd drugs.many teachers want kids drugged rather than work on solutions.teachers cannot diagnos add or adhd ....some kids cannot tolerate the meds..and what do we really know about long term usage.
all this is opinion only from experience...mine,family members and close friends.

I was on Prozac for a while after I tried to kill myself when I was a teen. All it did was make recovery slower and made my depression worse. The minute I got off the Prozac and started talking to someone, things got better. I think antidepressants are way to present. Sometimes all a person needs is someone to talk to and some exercise. But, don't get me wrong, antidepressants have helped other persons. But, I do think they are over prescribed.

I think that anti-depressants are wonderful- and literally a life saver- if prescribed and used appropriately. Anyone who has ever suffered from or had a loved one suffer from depression can truly appreciate how much they can help. They're not perfect, but what is? There are side effects, sometimes bad, sometimes minimal- but it is well worth it if brings you out of the shadows and allows you to live a normal life again.

Unfortunately modern life is so detached from the environment in which our brains evolved eons ago that many people need to alter their brain chemsitry (via prescriptions, booze, caffine, or illegal drugs) just to get by.

It's sad but it's true.

The brain was not designed to make us feel happy all the time and yet that is what we desire. Eventually science will get to the point where drugs will be able to keep us feeling good no matter what...even normal 'sad' things like grieving over the loss of a loved one will be eliminated for those that choose it.

I was taking an anti-depressant for a while due to job-related and personal stress. But I changed the job and the personal situation, got rid of the drugs and I feel a lot better now. I really didn't feel that great taking them, but my moods were more evened out.

Antidepressants are a wonderful drug, however, I feel they are overly used and abused. I think whoever prescribed the antidepressant to a person needs to re-evaluate that person every 6 months to see if the need still exists. Tapering off the drug is an excellent idea as well. Even if a person doesn't get off the drug, they might need a lower dose at some point.

no we don't live in a Prozac nation.
i think doctors who prescribe Prozac to 12 year olds shouldn't have a medical license.

Way overprescribed!! It seems as if whenever times get tough, people just want a drug to help "take the edge off." What did people do before anti-depressants? They got through it!!

i do not believe in anti-depressants for i don't think happiness can be found in a pill. i used to have severe depression and pills didn't cure it : friends and family did. Counselors and doctors give anti-depressants out like candy.

Yes, we do. Anti-depressants are the easy way out. I know lots of people have a chemical imbalance, I do too, but I don't deal with it by popping pills. I deal with it by being with friends, being active, and getting out into the sunshine.
