I don't think that's an accurate description. I think that's how you view them and the issues you look at.

Most liberals I know are VERY tightly wound and want more government intervention in business, and less in personal freedoms.

Conservatives are VERY tightly wound about personal freedoms, but are less so with business intervention.

As a centrist, I see them both as authoritarian in their own right. Both sides have their many faults.

that is not a very well defined question, too many weasel words. I mean some and mostly. Harden it up and you might find a real answer. by the way, politics is not always about personal attitudes in life. And putting it like you do only draws superficial answers from people who accept the myth that liberals are nice or democrats mean. Both parties can be downright nasty. Both serve the campaign donors.

In Australia it is the exact opposite. The Labor Party are for the workers and the Liberal Party look after big business and the wealthy.

conservatives like to be the ones to hold the sole authority and even when they mess up and the liberals take note of that...they pretend they did nothing wrong. They accuse the liberals of hating America which is completely absurb, although all the liberals want is the best for our nation.
Richard W, you forgot to add that conservatives such as Bush also believe that the rich should be rewarded with tax cuts, and that the middle-class should become poorer.

there are genuine philosophical differences between the parties. why do some people convert from the religion they were raised with?

we should do more to acknowledge that instead of sniping. we aren't all the same, and most opinions can be discussed on their merits rather than simply their origins...

Conservatives think people should be rewarded for working hard.
Liberals believe that those who have worked hard to get things should have to share with those are too lazy to work for it themselves.
I don't call that being a nurturer, I call it being an enabler.

Conservatives (I am one), believe that people can succed in life if they work hard and can have a better life if they work at it.

Liberals feel that people should be entitled to a good life without having to work for it, and think that those who have worked hard to get where they are should pay to support those who are on wellfare, some of which who refuse to get a job and are lazy.

Republicans want to be your daddy, Democrats want to be your mommy, Libertarians want to treat you like an adult. Get the picture?
