Fear is tricky little creature... although Fear can be a great teacher. Anyway... your question... "Silliness"... what do I care if I continue on past my present costume by myself or with millions of others... but... I am not sure if I would want most of those millions passing on into the same pleasant place that I am going...

Well the apocalyse symbolizes death and destruction. So, I would say fear of death is the underlying theme here. Fear of death or Thantophobia is quite a natural phenomenon. None of us know what will happen to us after we die, but to be morbidly afraid of death is unhealthy and detrimental to our lives.
