My wife and I were on a road trip and she thought that she was seeing a pattern in the license plate numbers in California in relation to the type of car they were on and I was wondering if there is one.

Yes there is a pattern, though not absolute application of it.
#LLL### standard passenger car and light SUV
#L##### Standard commercial
#LL#### Standard trailer
Any plate with DP or DV are handicapped access
DP = Disabled Person
DV = Disabled Veteran
In addition we hae "Vanity" plates of several different itterations.
Hope this clears things up.

There is currently no specific correlation between the type of vehicle and the license plate number in California. If you see some older license plates, you may find some different numbers because they changed the numbering system a few years ago.

All current California plates consist of 7 digits. The first digit is a number, then three letters, then three more numbers. Some people still have their old blue plates, which only had 6 digits. In California, the plates stay with the vehicle, as opposed to some states where the plates stay with the owner (like here in Nevada, where I moved to). So you will find vehicles from the 50's and 60's that still have very old plates as well.

The website below is the California DMV website, bookmarked to the page on license plates. Hope it helps.
