Ovulation occurs when a mature egg is released from the ovary, pushed down the fallopian tube, and is available to be fertilized. The lining of the uterus has thickened to prepare for a fertilized egg. If no conception occurs, the uterine lining as well as blood will be shed. The shedding of an unfertilized egg and the uterine wall is the time of menstruation.

Every baby girl is born with somewhere around 500 eggs, split up between your 2 ovaries. Once your menstual cycle begins the ovary's take turns each month releasing one egg. When the egg isn't fertilized then you have your period which gets rid of the unused egg. Sometimes women will release more than one egg in a month and that is how fraternal twins get made.
