i have a disability, and i'd need something light, little to no 'kickback', yet 'effective'. what would you suggest? i've shot a .22 pistol before and handled it well, but i'm thinking it's not as 'effective' as i'd want. serious answers only, please.

I agree with Brenda
Most people don't have the "balls" to shoot and thus won't pull the trigger and - and understand this - the thugs know it.
Often they will often "dare" the person to shoot them. Then the thug will take the gun away from the person and shoot that person with there own gun.
There are several police officers at our church and every so often the topic comes up - "I feel like I need a gun to protect my family".
The officers always seem to say the same thing - you are most likely to live thru a mugging or other crime and to see another day - without a gun. They then go on to recount what I put above.
And by the way here in Wash State - if you shot a thug and he is unarmed - you will be charged with assault with a weapon. Not everyone goes to prison, but it's about 55-60% that do jail/prison time. The rest still get the record of a "felony/gun crime conviction" but do whatever other "punishment" was deemed appropriate by the courts.
Home invasion is a little different matter, the local joke is "just make sure when you shoot them that they fall inside the house or drag them back inside..."

A .22 wmr is available is a 5 shot derriger type if personnal protection is the goal. It is easy to conceal and has enoung umph to cause folks to leave you alone. Several .32 auto are small and loud. very effective at close range.
If shooting sports are your goal, many competition shooters use some form of the .22. It is cheap enough to practice with and many companies offer high performance ammo.
I personnaly like my S&W model 60 Chief Special. Chamber in .357mag, it will also fire .38 special. The .38 special offers small recoil yet plenty of knock down power. Ammo is inexpensive enough to allow target practice and sport shooting. The S&W J frames are small and easy to handle. You may want to contact the National Rifle Assoc, aside from the press it gets for being extreme, the org offers excellant resouces for all types of firearm sports shooting and personal protection. Your local law enforcement or game and fish organizations will also be more than willing to help you find your solution.
Good Luck and Good Shooting.

a rifle or a shotgun will give you virtually no recoil or a .380 or a .25 are a little more powerful than a .22. I shoot a .357 with .38 bullets. The kickback is way less than if I shot it with .357 bullets. You can always go to a gun store and ask for help and at a lot of gun ranges you can rent guns to find out which one is best for you.

A glock 9 mm are nice and not much recoil,
still a 32 cal automatic could be your choice.
Heck i shoot a 44 mag one handed and fast so I think a 9mm is nothing.
go to a range and ask for a rental. they can show you several sizes. then you can pick.
also look into a gun that has the ring safety, one that cant fire with out the ring on your finger.

Look at compact to sub-compact models in the 9mm range (maybe even .380 Auto which is a bit smaller/weaker) Glock and Springfield-Armory have a great selection if you want something compact and lightweight (they don't offer .380 Auto in the US, however.) If you are looking at revolvers and not semi-autos try Ruger in .38 Special.

a 38 isnt a big gun but if used properly has decent stoping power. I dont know what your disability is so I cant make any better recomondation.A good choice is either a 38 revolver or 380 auto.It depends on your preference.

I'd recommend a .25 cal automatic but drunkin poets should avoid guns altogether. With hallow point bullets they nearly as effective as a .45. Please be careful!

I have a Walther PPK/S .380 and it is the best pistol I have ever had. Good knock-down, light kick. I recommend it.

None !
Are you planning on living a violent life? .... No you just want to be able to protect yourself ... stick with your .22 , if you are skillful with it you can disable any attacker without killing and being arrested for murder.
Good luck with your thinking, but I hope you find that you need no weapon but your mind.

My hubby's duty weapon is a Springfield XD .40. I can shoot that without a problem, doesn't have too much kick. I have a 12g for me, but that has a good kick.
